California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has compiled a set of Hazard Identification Materials that will be used by the state’s Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee (DART-IC), the state’s scientific expert panel for reproductive and developmental toxicity, when it convenes in November to consider whether Chlorpyrifos, a widely used pesticide that is sprayed on crops such as strawberries, causes reproductive toxicity and/or developmental harm.

The agency has made the Hazard Identification Materials available to the public in advance of the November 29 meeting of the DART-IC in Sacramento at CalEPA Headquarters.

The DART-IC considered chlorpyrifos in 2008 but did not add the pesticide to the Proposition 65 list at that time.  New evidence that relevant data on developmental toxicity has become available in the intervening years since the chemical was previously considered for listing has caused the expert panel to revisit whether chlorpyrifos is a reproductive or developmental toxicant.

OEHHA has included documents cited in the Hazard Identification Materials developed prior to the 20008 review of chlorpyrifos, along with risk assessments performed by the U.S. EPA in 2014 and 2016 and additional studies in the hazard identification materials that will be considered by the committee.

The agency has also released a set of Hazard Identification Materials for n-Hexane, which will also be evaluated by the DART-IC at the upcoming meeting on November 29.
