California Governor, Gavin Newsom, has signed into law a bill to require cosmetics manufacturers and importers to post online applicable safety data sheets (SDSs), which outline information on occupational safety and health for a particular substance or product.
The bill, AB 647, was introduced in February and was later passed by the legislature in the final days of the legislative session.
The measure was adopted as Section 6380.2 of the state’s Labor Code on September 20.
The new law will take effect on July 1, 2020. manufacturers and importers of cosmetics containing hazardous substances or disinfectants must post copies of the applicable SDSs on the company’s public website. The bill also contains a requirement that these safety data sheet also must be available, as a minimum, in Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean.
During the legislative session safety for cosmetics products and personal products were highlighted.
